What the calculator gives you

For your chosen date you get the named phase (for example Waxing Gibbous), the illuminated percentage of the disk, and the moon's age — the number of days since the previous New Moon. Together these pin down exactly what the Moon looked like.

How it is calculated

The phase depends on the angle between the Sun, Earth and Moon, which advances steadily through a 29.53-day synodic cycle. From any date we compute that angle and convert it into the illuminated fraction — the same physics that lets astronomers predict moons centuries ahead.
