Look up on two different nights and the Moon is a different shape — a thin sliver, a half, a bright full circle. Those shapes are the moon phases. Here is the secret: the Moon never really changes shape at all. It is a ball of rock, and the Sun always lights up exactly one half of it, like a flashlight shining on a tennis ball. Why the shape changes
The Moon is circling Earth, and you are watching from the middle. When the Moon is on the far side of Earth — opposite the Sun — you look straight at its lit face and see a round Full Moon. When it swings around to the Sun's side, the lit half points away from you and the side facing you is dark: that is the New Moon, almost invisible. Everywhere in between, you catch the lit half at a slant, which gives you a sliver or a bulge.
The eight phases, in order
As the Moon goes around once, it passes through eight named shapes: New, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent — then back to New. Two words unlock all of them. Waxing means growing (brighter night after night); waning means shrinking. A crescent is a thin sliver, less than half lit. A gibbous (say "GIB-us") is the fat shape — more than half lit but not quite full.
How long it takes
One full trip through all the phases takes about 29.5 days — roughly a month. That is no coincidence: the word "month" comes from "Moon." So about once a week the Moon steps to the next main shape — New, then First Quarter, then Full, then Last Quarter — and a little more than twelve of these cycles fit into a year.
One thing it is NOT
Many people think the dark part of the Moon is Earth's shadow falling across it. It is not! Earth's shadow only touches the Moon on the rare night of a lunar eclipse. Ordinary phases have nothing to do with shadows — they are only about which part of the always-half-lit Moon happens to be facing you.
