Phase 8 of 8 🌘
Waning Crescent Moon
The old Moon: a thinning sliver rising in the east before dawn, shrinking each morning toward new moon.
The next Waning Crescent nights begin on Saturday, August 8, 2026. Tonight the Moon is a First Quarter, 31% lit.
What a waning crescent is
The waning crescent is the final phase of the cycle — roughly days 23–29 — when the Moon shrinks from half lit down to a hairline sliver and finally disappears into the next new moon. From the northern hemisphere the thin lit edge faces left and down-toward-the-horizon, pointing at the Sun about to rise below it.
Like its waxing twin, the waning crescent shows beautiful earthshine: the dark bulk of the disk glows faintly inside the bright sliver, lit by sunlight bouncing off Earth. Because you see it in the calm, clear air of early morning, many observers find the “old Moon” even lovelier than the young evening crescent.
When & where to see it
Look east in the hour or two before sunrise. The waning crescent rises in the pre-dawn hours — later and closer to sunrise each morning — and climbs into the brightening twilight. After sunrise it is still technically up all morning, but the thin sliver quickly washes out in daylight.
Each successive dawn the crescent is thinner and lower. The last easy sighting is usually one or two mornings before new moon; then the sky goes moonless, and a couple of evenings later the young waxing crescent reappears in the west.
Exact rise and set times depend on where you stand — check moonrise & moonset for your location.

Waning Crescent meaning
Symbolically the waning crescent is the phase of rest and surrender — the exhale at the end of the cycle. Traditions read it as a time for recovery, reflection and quietly preparing intentions for the new moon to come. More on moon phase meanings →
Frequently Asked
What does a waning crescent moon mean?
It is the last phase of the lunar cycle: less than half lit and shrinking each day, a few days away from new moon. Symbolically it is linked to rest, release and closure.
When can I see a waning crescent moon?
In the eastern sky before and around dawn. It rises in the early morning hours and fades into daylight after sunrise — it is never visible in the evening.
Why does the crescent moon sometimes look like a smile?
Near the tropics the crescent’s lit edge can face nearly straight down toward the Sun below the horizon, tilting the sliver into a horizontal “smile”. The effect depends on your latitude and the season.
How long does the waning crescent last?
About 6–7 days, from last quarter until the Moon disappears at new moon.
